Autism and Sensory Processing: Why Your Child's Nervous System Is Always Under Attack

Sensory processing in autistic kids isn't just being picky or sensitive — it's a nervous system wired to receive the world at full volume, all the time. Here's what's actually happening, and what actually helps.

It starts out fine. She's excited about the birthday party. She picked out her outfit the night before, talked about the pink cake all morning, asked four times if it was time to go yet. She walks in and it's loud and bright and she finds her best friend immediately. For a few minutes, everything is good. Then a balloon pops. The kids scream — because that's what kids do — and the fluorescent lights are buzzing at a frequency nobody else seems to notice, and someone puts cake on her fingers because they were trying to help, and then another balloon pops, and she goes from excited to completely overwhelmed in four minutes. Now she's on the floor by the coats, hands over her ears, crying. You feel the eyes of the other parents on you. Someone says something about spoiled. You know that's not what this is — but you're not sure exactly what it *is*, or how to explain it, or how to help in this moment. This post is for that moment. And for all the moments like it. ## What Sensory Processing Actually Is Your brain receives input from the world constantly — sound, light, touch, smell, movement, internal body signals. Its job isn't just to receive all of that input. Its job is to *filter* it. To sort out what's important from what's background. To prioritize the conversation you're having over the sound of the ventilation system. To let your clothes touch your skin without registering it consciously a hundred times a day. That filtering and prioritizing process is called sensory processing. It happens automatically, below the level of conscious awareness, thousands of times every hour. In autistic kids, the filter works differently. Some signals get amplified — turned up so high that what registers as "background hum" for most people arrives as "full volume intrusion" for an autistic child. Some signals get missed entirely — the child who doesn't notice they're cold, or doesn't feel a cut on their hand. And the sorting system — the process that decides what gets flagged as important — works on different priorities than what the world is designed for. This isn't a choice. It's not sensitivity as a personality trait. It's a neurological difference in how sensory input gets received, processed, and responded to. And it's present across all eight senses — not just the five most people think about. ## Hyper vs. Hyposensitivity — And Why the Same Child Can Have Both Sensory differences in autistic kids tend to show up in two directions: hypersensitivity (over-responsiveness) and hyposensitivity (under-responsiveness). Both are common. And — here's the part that confuses a lot of parents — the same child can have both, sometimes in the same sensory channel, sometimes simultaneously. The child who can't tolerate the seam in her sock but doesn't notice she's been sitting on her foot for twenty minutes and has no sensation in it? That's hypersensitivity and hyposensitivity in the same body. **Hypersensitivity** looks like: - Covering ears for sounds others don't seem to notice - Gagging at smells that don't bother anyone else - Refusing clothing because of how it feels on the skin - Distress at bright lights, especially fluorescent lights - Strong reactions to light touch **Hyposensitivity** looks like: - Not noticing temperature (dressed for summer in winter) - High pain tolerance — doesn't register injuries - Sensory *seeking* — craving intense input like crashing, spinning, or biting - Difficulty knowing where their body is in space - Needing to touch everything or chew on things to get enough input The "sensory seeker" is sometimes the most confusing profile for parents, because the behavior looks so different from what people picture when they think about sensory sensitivity. But it's the same underlying process — a nervous system trying to regulate itself by getting the input it needs. ## The 8 Senses: A Brief Map Most people learned about five senses in school. There are actually eight, and autistic kids can have differences in any of them. **Visual** — How the brain processes light, color, movement, and visual detail. Fluorescent lights, busy visual environments, and high-contrast settings can all be difficult. **Auditory** — Not just volume, but also frequency, background noise, and the ability to filter relevant sounds from irrelevant ones. Many autistic kids hear things others tune out and can't turn the volume down. **Tactile** — Touch. This includes clothing textures, tags, sock seams, food textures in the mouth, light vs. deep pressure, and the difference between self-initiated touch and unexpected touch. Unexpected touch is almost always processed more intensely. **Olfactory** — Smell. Often one of the more invisible sensory channels until it becomes suddenly very obvious — the cafeteria that's too overwhelming to eat in, the lotion that triggers a meltdown, the aversion to certain people's scent. **Gustatory** — Taste and texture in food. Closely linked to tactile sensitivity in the mouth. This is usually what's driving "picky eating" in autistic kids — not preference or willpower, but genuine sensory difficulty. **Vestibular** — The sense of movement and balance. Located in the inner ear. Differences here show up as motion sensitivity, difficulty with spinning or swinging (or intense craving for it), and challenges with transitions between positions. **Proprioceptive** — The sense of where your body is in space, without looking. This comes from muscles and joints. Kids who crash into things, hug too hard, stomp when they walk, or love tight pressure are often seeking proprioceptive input. **Interoception** — The one nobody talks about. This is the sense of your internal body state: hunger, fullness, temperature, pain, heart rate, the need to use the bathroom. Autistic kids frequently have interoceptive differences — which means they may genuinely not notice they're hungry until they're dysregulated from low blood sugar, or not realize they need the bathroom until urgency is extreme. You don't need to memorize these. But running them against what you're seeing in your child can be enormously clarifying. ## Why Sensory Differences Lead to Meltdowns One of the most important things to understand about sensory processing in autistic kids is that it's cumulative. The child who holds it together from 8am to 3pm isn't having a sensory-free day. She's been processing at full capacity the entire time. The fluorescent lights in the hallway. The unpredictable noise levels in the cafeteria. The tags in her shirt. The fire drill. The unexpected shoulder touch from a classmate. Each one of those is manageable in isolation. But they stack. By 3:15, when you ask about homework, the stack has reached the limit. The homework question is the one that tips it — but it's not *about* the homework. The meltdown that looks like a reaction to your question is actually the result of eight hours of maximum-effort sensory regulation, and the accumulated load finally exceeding the system's capacity. This is why the after-school meltdown is so common — and so often misread as defiance or manipulation. It's neither. The thinking is: the more exposure, the more they get used to it. This is not how sensory processing differences work. And in many cases, forcing it makes things worse. When a sensory-sensitive child is pushed past their tolerance without support, a few things happen. First, the nervous system registers the experience as a threat — it adds evidence to the idea that this sensation is something to be feared and escaped. Second, the trust ruptures. If the adult who is supposed to keep you safe is forcing the painful thing, the nervous system goes into more intense defensive mode, not less. Gradual desensitization — used thoughtfully, in a co-regulated context, at the child's pace — can absolutely help expand sensory tolerance over time. But the key words are *gradual*, *co-regulated*, and *at the child's pace*. Occupational therapists trained in sensory integration therapy do this as a clinical skill. It's different from "hold her down until she eats it." The goal during development isn't to eliminate sensory sensitivity through exposure. The goal is to reduce the sensory load before it stacks to the threshold, not just respond when it does. **Start with a sensory audit.** Walk through your home with your child's sensory profile in mind. What's the lighting like? Is there a lot of background noise? What are the textures on furniture and clothing? Where are the overwhelming spots and the regulating spots? Most families find there are a few high-difficulty zones (often the kitchen, which has a lot of smell, sound, and visual stimulation) and a few naturally regulating ones (the child's bedroom, a closet, a corner with low light). **Build sensory breaks into the day.** Not as a response to dysregulation — as a prevention strategy. Regularly scheduled input that the child knows is coming (proprioceptive input, quiet time, movement breaks) reduces the demand on the nervous system to manage the load alone. **Understand the sensory diet.** Not food — a personalized activity plan that gives the nervous system the specific input it needs throughout the day to stay regulated. A child who needs heavy proprioceptive input might do better with a morning of jumping, climbing, or carrying things before school. ## What Actually Helps: In the Moment When sensory overload is happening, the sequence matters. **Regulation before reasoning.** The part of the brain that can hear your explanation, problem-solve, or respond to questions is offline during sensory overwhelm. Talking through what happened, setting expectations, or trying to redirect are all efforts directed at a brain that is temporarily unavailable. Prioritize helping the nervous system down-regulate first. **Co-regulation over correction.** Your regulated presence is the most powerful tool you have. This doesn't mean being cheerful or narrating calmly — it means your own nervous system is steady, which gives theirs something to co-regulate with. Slow breath. Low voice. Less talking, more presence. **Exit before the threshold.** If you can recognize the early signs of sensory loading — increased activity, covering ears, going quiet, stimming escalating — an early exit is infinitely more effective than a managed meltdown. "I think we need a break" before the meltdown is different from "let's leave" during it. **Understand the difference between a sensory break and a time-out.** A sensory break is restorative — it reduces input, gives the nervous system space to recover, and is offered as support, not consequence. A time-out is corrective — it follows a behavior and is framed as consequence. Sending a dysregulated child to their room as punishment can look similar from the outside, but the child's experience of it is completely different. One works. The other adds shame to an already overwhelmed system. Soft fabrics (jersey, bamboo, fleece) over stiff or scratchy ones. Tags cut out or avoided entirely. Waistbands that aren't tight. Some kids do better with compression — snug clothing that provides proprioceptive input. Others need loose. Trial and error, listening to what your child says feels good. **Food:** Sensory-related food selectivity is not willful picky eating. The child who gags on certain textures is experiencing a genuine sensory response, not performing. Food texture scaffolding — gradually introducing tolerated textures, building familiarity, respecting "safe foods" while expanding slowly — is very different from forcing. An OT or feeding therapist can help with this if it's significantly affecting nutrition or daily life. **School:** The school environment is often the highest sensory load of the day. Accommodations that can make a real difference include: weighted blankets or lap pads at the desk, access to a quiet corner or sensory room, fidget tools (which support proprioceptive regulation during sitting tasks), flexible seating (wobble cushion, standing desk option), noise-reducing headphones for loud transitions or assemblies. If sensory differences are affecting school functioning, educational occupational therapy can be included in an IEP as a related service. ## When to Seek Occupational Therapy Occupational therapy with a sensory integration focus is often the most effective professional support for sensory processing differences in autistic kids. Consider pursuing an OT evaluation when: - Sensory sensitivities are significantly affecting daily function — getting dressed, eating, school participation, social activities - Clothing or food selectivity is limiting nutrition or creating daily distress - Your child is regularly unable to access learning because of sensory overwhelm at school - The sensory load is affecting sleep (which is already a common challenge for autistic kids) - You want a professional sensory profile and a structured, individualized plan What sensory integration therapy actually involves: it's not forcing exposure. It's providing controlled, meaningful sensory experiences in a therapeutic environment — swings, weighted tools, textures, movement — to help the nervous system learn to process and respond more flexibly. A good pediatric OT works *with* the child's sensory profile, not against it. The goal isn't to make autistic kids tolerate a full-sensory world without support. The world is loud and bright and unpredictable and most of it wasn't designed for nervous systems like hers. The goal is to build the environments, tools, and skills that let her brain do what it does — deeply, intensely, with extraordinary capacity for certain kinds of experience — without being constantly overwhelmed by the input it was never designed to manage alone.
