ADHD and Food: Why Eating Feels So Complicated

The Forgetter

The Impulsive Eater

Most eating advice is designed for nervous systems with functional interoception, consistent executive function, and reliable hunger cues. That's not the ADHD situation. So the standard approaches fail in predictable ways:
"Just meal prep on Sundays." Requires a long, multi-step executive function session every seven days, consistently, indefinitely. Tracking calories or macros daily. "Listen to your hunger cues." This is not bad advice for people with intact interoception. For people with ADHD, it's like telling someone with impaired color vision to use the traffic light colors. The information isn't arriving reliably. A strategy built on that information doesn't work.
What Actually Helps
The useful reframe is this: don't build systems that assume functional hunger cues. Build systems that work around the actual mechanism.
Scheduled eating times as external structure. Not intuitive eating — the opposite of intuitive eating. A scheduled alarm at noon that says "eat now" is a workaround for interoception gaps. The child or adult who isn't hungry at lunch after taking their morning dose isn't making excuses. The appetite suppression is pharmacological and real.
