You know the pattern. Two weeks of extraordinary productivity — early mornings, late nights, ideas firing, everything clicking. You feel like the version of yourself you always suspected was possible.

And then the crash.

You can't start a single task. Not the urgent ones. Not the easy ones. Not even the ones you actually want to do. You scroll. You sit. You make a list and then stare at the list. The dishes that were trivial last week now feel like climbing a mountain. Emails sit unanswered for days. The shame starts to build — you were doing so well, what happened? — and so you push harder. Which makes it worse. Which makes you push harder again.

Most people call this laziness, or burnout, or depression. It's not. It's something more specific: ADHD burnout. And understanding what it actually is changes how you recover from it.

What ADHD Burnout Actually Is

ADHD burnout is not the same as general workplace burnout, though it can look similar from the outside. General burnout is the result of too much external demand over too long a period. You worked too hard, for too many months, with too little recovery. That's real, and it's exhausting.

ADHD burnout is different. It's the result of chronically overriding a dysregulated executive function system. The ADHD brain doesn't get basic executive functions for free — working memory, task initiation, time perception, emotional regulation, sustained attention, impulse control. Every one of those has to be managed manually, consciously, effortfully. Every single day.

Neurotypical people do most of that on autopilot. They don't have to decide to start a task; they just start it. They don't have to construct a mental scaffold around every deadline; time pressure registers naturally. They don't have to consciously regulate emotional responses to small frustrations; the brain handles it.

People with ADHD do all of that manually. That's an enormous energy expenditure that neurotypical people simply don't pay — and it's invisible to everyone, including the person paying it.

ADHD burnout is what happens when that account runs dry. The brain has been running on willpower debt for weeks, months, sometimes years, and the debt comes due. Executive function doesn't just get harder — it stops. Completely.

This is also distinct from autistic burnout, which is driven largely by the cumulative cost of masking and sensory processing over time. ADHD burnout is driven by executive dysfunction compensation. The Boom-Bust Cycle

The ADHD boom-bust cycle has a recognizable shape once you know what you're looking at:

Hyperfocus sprint. A deadline, a new project, a burst of genuine interest — something provides enough dopamine to override the executive function gaps. You go all in. You're hyperfocused, you're producing, you feel invincible. You also sleep less, eat irregularly, skip the things that restore you, and run far past your actual capacity because you can't feel where your limit is.

Dopamine crash. The interest or urgency wears off. The dopamine that was powering the sprint drops. Suddenly the scaffolding disappears and you're standing in the rubble of all the things you neglected during the sprint — the unanswered messages, the abandoned routines, the depleted body.

Executive function failure. This is the part that's hard to explain to people who haven't experienced it. It's not that things feel hard. It's that the machinery for starting them doesn't engage at all. You want to do the task. You understand it needs to be done. You are staring directly at it. Nothing happens. The gap between intention and action is absolute.

Guilt and shame. Because the failure looks like not trying, and because you've been told your whole life that you just need to try harder, the crash generates a shame spiral. The shame depletes the prefrontal cortex further — shame literally suppresses the neural resources you'd need to get moving again. It doesn't motivate. It paralyzes. The harder push. Eventually, something forces action — a deadline, a panic response, someone else's expectations. You push through on adrenaline. The cycle begins again.

Here's the key feature that makes ADHD brains specifically vulnerable to this cycle: there is no internal "full" signal for effort. The prefrontal cortex in ADHD doesn't regulate effort expenditure the same way it does in neurotypical brains. So people overshoot routinely and don't realize it until the crash has already happened. You don't feel yourself approaching the limit. You just hit the wall.

Signs You're in ADHD Burnout (Not Just Tired)

Ordinary tiredness responds to sleep. ADHD burnout doesn't — or at least not quickly. Here's what ADHD burnout specifically looks like:

You can't start anything — including things you want to do. This is the diagnostic marker. If you're just tired, you drag yourself through tasks. In ADHD burnout, the task initiation mechanism doesn't engage regardless of how much you want the outcome. Fun things, necessary things, simple things — all equally impossible to begin.

Emotional numbness or sudden irritability with no obvious cause. The emotional regulation system is as depleted as the executive function system. You may feel oddly flat and disconnected, or you may find yourself snapping at small things that wouldn't normally register. Both are the same system — just expressing the depletion differently.

Tasks that were manageable last week now feel impossible. This is the temporal shift that makes ADHD burnout feel destabilizing. It's not just that hard things are harder — it's that easy things have moved into the "hard" category. The threshold has dropped across the board.

Hypervigilance about forgetting things, but no ability to act on them. This one is particularly cruel. You're aware of all the things you should be doing. You're anxious about them. But the awareness doesn't translate into action. The gap between knowing and doing feels uncrossable.

The scrolling trap. You're not relaxing. You're not choosing to rest. You're cycling through apps in a dissociated, joyless way because it provides just enough low-grade stimulation to keep your brain from confronting the void — but not enough to restore anything. It feels like rest from the outside. It isn't. It's paralysis with a screen in front of it.

Why Rest Doesn't Fix It

The standard advice for burnout is "take a break." Sleep more. Do less. Step away. That advice is not wrong for general burnout. For ADHD burnout, it's incomplete — and sometimes actively counterproductive.

Here's why: ADHD burnout isn't just an energy deficit. It's a dopamine deficit. The neurotransmitter system that regulates motivation, reward, and the feeling that an action is worth taking is depleted — not just the general-purpose energy reserve. You can lie in a dark room for three days and still wake up unable to start a task, because the mechanism that initiates action isn't powered by rest.

Scrolling is the perfect illustration. It feels like rest. It's low-demand, low-effort, requires nothing. But it doesn't restore dopamine — it provides a trickle of low-quality stimulation that keeps you occupied without actually replenishing anything. After six hours of scrolling you are equally or more depleted than when you started.

What actually restores an ADHD brain in burnout is different from what restores a neurotypical brain in burnout:

Genuine novelty — something new, genuinely interesting, even briefly. Not productive novelty. Just real interest. A documentary about something you know nothing about. A new trail. A conversation with someone who thinks completely differently from you. Novelty triggers dopamine in a way that familiar low-demand activities don't.

Physical movement — particularly vigorous movement. Exercise increases dopamine and norepinephrine availability for hours afterward. It's not a cure for burnout, but it's one of the only things that directly addresses the dopamine depletion rather than just waiting it out. Creative engagement — making something, building something, solving something for its own sake. Not work. Not productivity. But genuine creative play that engages the interest-based motivation system. Drawing, cooking, tinkering, writing for no one — whatever activates genuine interest.

The common thread: activities that restore dopamine rather than just lower demand. Rest is necessary but not sufficient. You need recovery that actively refills the system, not just pauses the drain.

The Masking Amplifier

For some adults with ADHD, the burnout cycle hits harder and faster than what the executive dysfunction load alone would predict. There's a compounding factor: masking.

Masking is the process of suppressing, hiding, or compensating for ADHD symptoms in order to appear neurotypical. It's often done unconsciously, developed over years of learning what gets punished and what doesn't. You learn to sit still even when your body needs to move. You rehearse conversations before they happen to catch the impulsive thing you'd otherwise say. You build elaborate systems to simulate the organizational functioning that doesn't come naturally. You perform attentiveness even when your attention has completely left the room.

Masking costs enormous energy on top of the executive dysfunction compensation cost. It's a second tax, levied all day, on the same depleted system.

Adults with ADHD who built high-achieving "compensation identities" — who became very good at appearing capable, organized, and on top of it — often have the most severe burnout cycles because the performance standard they've established is unsustainable. Every day they're managing not just their ADHD but the gap between their ADHD and the identity they've constructed around compensating for it. When that collapses, it collapses completely.

Women with ADHD are particularly susceptible to this pattern. The socialization toward agreeableness, caretaking, and social performance adds a layer of masking that often goes unrecognized even by the person doing it. Late-diagnosed women — those who got their diagnosis in their 30s, 40s, or beyond — frequently report years of burnout cycles that were misattributed to anxiety, depression, or personality, because the ADHD underneath them was invisible. The masking amplifier means that the path to sustainable recovery often requires not just managing the ADHD more effectively, but reducing the performance demand — which means confronting the compensation identity and allowing yourself to be visibly, honestly limited. That's one of the harder things ADHD burnout asks of people. It's also one of the most important.

What Actually Helps

Recovering from ADHD burnout — and preventing the next cycle — requires addressing the actual mechanisms, not the symptoms. Here's what actually makes a difference:

Identify your real capacity, not your aspirational capacity. Most people with ADHD plan at their best-day capacity and then feel like failures every other day. Real capacity is what you can sustain across an average week, not what's possible when everything aligns. Working at 60-70% of your maximum leaves the buffer that prevents the crash. It feels like underperforming. It actually produces more over time, because you stop losing entire weeks to recovery. Choose dopamine-restorative recovery, not just low-demand recovery. As covered above — the distinction between activities that refill the system and activities that just pause the drain. Build a list of things that genuinely restore you and access them deliberately during recovery, rather than defaulting to scrolling because it requires the least decision-making.

Remove the shame from the crash. This is not a productivity tip. It's neurologically important. Shame suppresses the prefrontal cortex — the exact system you need to come back online. Treating the crash as a character failure guarantees it lasts longer. Treating it as a physiological event — the predictable output of a system that was overloaded — allows recovery to begin. This isn't letting yourself off the hook. It's understanding the mechanism clearly enough to work with it.

Structure work in cycles that match ADHD energy patterns. Calendar-based productivity assumes consistent daily output. ADHD energy doesn't work that way. Sprint periods followed by recovery periods — built into the structure deliberately, rather than forced by collapse — let you use the high-energy phases without paying for them with total crashes. The goal isn't to eliminate the boom-bust entirely; it's to make the bust a planned recovery rather than an involuntary shutdown.

Medical review. If you're burning out repeatedly, it's worth bringing that pattern to whoever manages your ADHD treatment. Burnout cycles are sometimes the signal that medication isn't calibrated correctly — that the dose or timing or type isn't matching your actual neurological needs. A stimulant that's wearing off in the afternoon, leaving you unmedicated during your most demanding evening hours, will predictably generate the patterns described in this post. That's a fixable problem, not a character flaw.

You're Not Broken. You're Overdrawn.

The ADHD brain is not a broken neurotypical brain. It's a brain that works differently, uses energy differently, and crashes in ways that look voluntary from the outside because the deficit is invisible. The person watching you scroll on the couch doesn't see the depleted dopamine system, the executive function machinery that's offline, the months of compensation that preceded it. They see someone choosing not to do things.

You know it's not a choice. The challenge is building a life that accounts for how your brain actually works — not the aspirational brain you're supposed to have, but the real one you have. That means sustainable load, planned recovery, dopamine-restorative activities, and a treatment team that understands the full picture.

The boom-bust cycle doesn't have to run your life. But getting out of it requires understanding what's actually happening — which is not laziness, not weak will, not failure of character. It's a neurological overdraft that needs to be understood on its own terms.
